High performance miniature actuation for multi-use applications across a variety of harsh environments.
Ingenium Aerospace was requested to create, build and validate a remarkably compact, high-performance design within an extremely modest budget and very short schedule. The task was to design a miniature, high-power dense system which was capable of 25 Hz small amplitude frequency response and could be used interchangeably on missiles, valves and other trunnion mounted applications. These demanding requirements included high duty cycle, large temperature extremes and harsh environmental conditions typical of naval environments.
Ingenium Aerospace created a versatile and highly modular actuation system. This system can be driven by 28 VDC or 50 VDC motors. The actuator can be provided with or without a 28 VDC solenoid brake for load holding. The actuator utilized a hall effect device (HED) for commutation and has a custom-designed Ingenium planetary gearhead and ball screw output. All of this is available in a package the size of a highlighter marker and a remarkable weight of only 6.3 ounces which includes the optional brake.
Results & Outcome
Ingenium Aerospace successfully designed, produced and validated the miniature actuation product as requested, developing a solution with unprecedented performance in this package size. The Ingenium engineering team surpassed the technical expectations, making this product is a viable candidate for any high performance, package-constrained application with a scalable design to support higher or lower performance levels.
