Developing an electromechanical geared rotary actuator (EGRA) to open/close a camera door on the C-295 and CN-235 aircraft.
The CN-235 and C-295 is a twin-turboprop tactical military transport aircraft manufactured and assembled in Europe. Its primary military roles include maritime patrol, reconnaissance and surveillance, and air transport. All functionality needed to be contained in a 2 inches by 2 inches by 8.5 inches long package. As a result, other companies chose not to bid on the project or had failed to adequately package the unit.
Ingenium Aerospace was recommended as a solution by another actuation company due to the difficult packaging constraints required to make this product successful. Ingenium Aerospace recognized that a disciplined approach to program management and requirements compliance, coupled with creative packaging were keys to success. Utilizing our experienced designers, the Ingenium team working closely with the customer’s aircraft designers to identify an acceptable solution for the packaging challenge in combination with complexity of the actuator. The custom designed EGRA houses a brush DC motor with a custom DC fail safe brake, and 800:1 custom multi-stage planetary gear ratio, position sensor and on-board custom-designed electronics which provide current limiting and voltage regulation. The entire system fits within the desired size constraints and weighs less than 2.2 Lbs.
Results & Outcome
Ingenium Aerospace delivered a qualified, high-quality product that meets or exceeded all of the requirements for these vehicles within nine months. The units are flying successfully and are meeting all mission objectives. Ingenium deployed a team to Europe to assist our customer with integration and cabling into the aircraft.
